Jason Isbell plans new CD, switches labels

Tuesday, November 25, 2008 – Former Drive-By Truckers member Jason Isbell is slated to release his second disc in February 2009 on a new label for him, Lightning Rod Records.

Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit's self-titled disc drops Feb. 17. Isbell debuted on New West Records. This is his first release with his band The 400 Unit: Derry deBorja (keyboards), Jimbo Hart (bass) and Browan Lollar (guitar). Matt Pence (Centro-matic/South San Gabriel) was co-producer, drummer and engineer.

The album was co-produced by Isbell and The 400 Unit. "I want it to be known that it's a band record," said Isbell. "I want it to be known that it's something we all did together. Even though I wrote the songs, it was a very inclusive project."

Isbell posted the new track, Seven-Mile Island on the band's MySpace site. The album was recorded at the FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Ala.

Isbell and The 400 Unit have played more than 200 dates since the release of "Sirens Of The Ditch" in 2006 and will announce the first round of their 2009 dates soon.

Songs on the new CD are:
1. Seven-Mile Island
2. Sunstroke
3. Good
4. Cigarettes and Wine
5. However Long
6. Coda
7. The Blue
8. No Choice in the Matter
9. Soldiers Get Strange
10. Streetlights
11. The Last Song I Will Write

This is the second release for Nashville-based Lightning Rod Records whose US distribution and marketing is handled by Thirty Tigers/RED. James McMurtry also is on the label.

CD reviews for Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit

CD review - Live From The Ryman Vol. 2 Jason Isbell opens by telling the audience this is their 50th appearance at the legendary Ryman, a feat not many can equal. Moreover, it's the recent seven, eight and now 10-day residencies that Isbell and his band have experienced, a testament to the in-demand status of one of the best live performing bands of today. The multiple dates ensure that the listener is getting the best versions of 15 of Isbell's songs (the shows were 19 or 20 songs), culled from his two recent albums, ...
CD review - Weathervanes Bob Dylan famously sang about how you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows, and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit do more than just gage wind direction with "Weathervanes." Isbell has a unique ability to get deep inside the heads of his various characters to reveal insightful patterns of thought and behavior. Along with his talented 400 Unit band, Isbell has given yet another smart set of songs. Isbell is especially adept at diagnosing pain points. ...
CD review - Georgia Blue Jason Isbell deserves kudos for putting a unique spin on the benefit album. Instead of throwing together a bunch of many times unrelated celebrities to pitch in, Isbell has brought together talented performers to cover Georgia-related songs and songs by Georgia-based artists. All proceeds support Black Voters Matter, Fair Fight and Georgia Stand-Up. Even if you may not support these groups, you will still enjoy this set of mostly familiar songs. The album opens and closes with two R.E.M. songs. ...
