Gentle Giant passes

Friday, September 8, 2017 – Don Williams, the Gentle Giant, who scored 17 number 1 hits during his career, died at 78 on Friday.

Known for his easy going singing bass, Williams was a 2010 inductee to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Among his best known songs was "Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good" and "I Believe in You."

Williams was born on May 27, 1939 in Floydada, Texas. He was a member of the folk-pop group Pozo-Seco Singers for 7 years before starting his solo career in 1971. He released his first album, "Don Williams Volume One," in 1974 on JMI Records. From his first number 1, ""I Wouldn't Want to Live If You Didn't Love Me," in 1974 through his last top 10, "Lord Have Mercy on a Country Boy," in 1991, every song Williams released as a single hit top 10 except for 2.

In 1978, Williams won the Academy of Country Music award for Single of the Year for "Tulsa Time" and Country Music Association award for Male Vocalist of the Year.

He retired from singing two years ago.

His understated charms seem to have been lost in the shuffle when one considers the names brought up as classic singers - Jones, Haggard, Gosdin...but not the man once dubbed the, "Gentle Giant," for his tall stature and mellow voice. Williams has never really stopped recording new material, though his hit-making Nashville days are behind him. This latest disc has some songs that should hold up ...
