Maybe Not Tonight (Mercury, 1999)

Sammy Kershaw

Reviewed by Larry Stephens

Sammy Kershaw has one of the more distinctive voices in country music today, which may be why he isn't a superstar. In today's pop-driven country, he may just be too country.

The title song (co-written by producer Keith Stegall) is a duet with Lorrie Morgan and their voices blend so well - a great match. "Without Strings" makes use of a big string section well coordinated with the who's who backup country band, a sound that brings memories of Price and Reeves. From love to heartbreak, "Look What I Did To Us" touches the heart of anyone who has taken the wrong turn on the road of love. The album isn't perfect: "Ouch" aptly describes what's at best a novelty song, but you'll enjoy "More Than I Can Say" and "I've Never Gone This Far Before." And he can sell a ballad with the best that ever sang country - just listen to "How Much Does The World Weigh" and you'll be convinced.

This should be a solid gold addition to the Kershaw discography.
