Now and Again (Audium, 2000)

Daryle Singletary

Reviewed by Larry Stephens

If you think classic sound of country music has disappeared, then listen to Daryle Singletary on this fabulous album. His clear baritone voice, the lyrics, the backup music and the cadence of the songs recall the country music sound made popular by singers like Faron Young and George Jones.

This might be better titled a "greatest hits plus" CD, for 6 of the 10 songs are reissues; most of these, like "Amen Kind of Love," will be familiar to country music radio listeners. He makes a couple of nods to hot new country with two of the new titles, "I Knew I Loved You" and "Now and Again," but he doesn't lose his signature sound on these, the cuts still about his voiceand the song, not a driving dance beat.

But two of the songs epitomize the country music long-time fans love. From the fiddle intro and understated instrumental break on "Would These Arms Be In Your Way" to classic lines of "The Note," has to be one of the best country music songs ever recorded.
