Musgraves, Carpenter release new albums

Friday, March 30, 2018 – Kacey Musgraves and Mary Chapin Carpenter lead the list of new releases today.

Musgraves is out with "Slow Burn," which takes a different turn from previous efforts where Musgraves cut her teeth on being pretty much a traditional country singer. She adds a bit of disc and electronica on a few tracks and generally steers clear of anything overtly traditional. Musgraves proves to be more expressive on the 13-track album.

Carpenter's "Sometimes Just The Sky" takes a look back and forward. The disc contains reworked songs from throughout Carpenter's career with the title track being the lone new track of the 13. "Heroes and Heroines," which first appeared on 1987's "Hometown Girl," is the first single. Vince Mendoza produced the disc.

Newcomer Ashley McBryde releases "Girl Going Nowhere," her debut at the age of 34. The first single is "A Little Dive Bar in Dahlonega." McBryde bears a strong resemblance to Brandy Clark and Mary Chapin Carpenter vocally.

Kim Richey returns with her first album in five years, "Edgeland," on Yep Roc. Richey has enjoyed a long career, spanning 23 years and has put out 8 albums in that time. Recorded in Nashville, "Edgeland" is Richey's eighth studio album was produced by Brad Jones (Over the Rhine, Hayes Carll, Josh Rouse).

CD reviews for Kacey Musgraves

CD review - star-crossed It's nearly impossible not to read between the lines when listening to Kacey Musgraves' "star-crossed" album, as it's her first release after her divorce from Ruston Kelley. The good news, is that Musgraves doesn't sound angry and out for revenge on her ex. In other words, he doesn't go all Alanis Morissette with these 15 songs. Instead, to some extent, Musgraves sounds to be putting at least some of the blame on herself. One titled "Good Wife," finds ...
CD review - Very Kacey Christmas Sometimes it's not about what you play, but the way you play it, and with "A Very Kacey Christmas," Kacey Musgraves sacrifices a little surprise for a relatively pleasantly predictable holiday offering. For instance, Musgraves' duet with Willie Nelson plays on (surprise surprise) the iconic singer's propensity to smoke weed when they wish the world "A Willie Nice Christmas." Although there are some sad country songs, like "Christmas Makes Me Cry" and ...
CD review - Pageant Material Kacey Musgraves is a welcome throwback in these bro and modern country times. That means you're going to hear sharp lyrics with more than a touch of humor, story songs and even instrumentation that recalls traditional country, like pedal steel, mandolin and a Johnny Cash drumbeat. Musgraves' tour de force is her uncanny ability to turn a phrase. She does employ fellow producers Luke Laird and Shane McAnally plus Brandy Clark and Josh Osborne, among others, for lyrical help. ...
