Destination of Life (Rounder, 2009)

Rhonda Vincent

Reviewed by George Hauenstein

Rhonda Vincent rarely disappoints. She knows the formula that her fans like, and she usually delivers, while at the same time reaching out to new fans. That's why she's a regular IBMA award winner and favorite at concerts and festivals nationwide.

This album doesn't disappoint either. Vincent's formula here includes hard-driving bluegrass tunes like Heart Wrenching Lovesick Memories and Last Time Loving You, country-tinged bluegrass like Destination Life and Crazy What A Lonely Heart Will Do, a duet with Ben Nelson, great gospel songs, including I Heard My Saviour Calling Me and the a cappella, When I Travel My Last Mile (He Will Hold My Hand). One of the best tunes is the instrumental classic, Eight of January, with cool interplay between the lead instruments, mandolin, fiddle and banjo. She also includes a bluegrassy version of the old Poco hit Crazy Love.

Her touring band, The Rage, is also featured, including fiddler extraordinaire Hunter Berry. Though a real recording and touring veteran, this album shows Vincent's not one to rest on her laurels. Chalk up another winner for Rhonda Vincent.
