My Kind of Christmas (expanded version) (Nash Icon, 2017)
Reba McEntire
Reviewed by Dan MacIntosh
Reba is joined by the dynamic husband and wife team, Vince Gill and Amy Grant, for a trio sing of the modern Christmas favorite, "Mary Did You Know." All are distinctive vocal stylists, which means Reba's guests aren't ever lost in her mighty shadow. Speaking of powerful vocalists, Lauren Daigle reprises her duet role with Reba for an acoustic rendition of "Back to God." Two of the best modern female voices, Kelly Clarkson and Trisha Yearwood, partner with Reba for the album-closing "Silent Night," which sounds a little like a choir when they're all singing together. Lastly, Darius Rucker holds his own during the gentle "O Little Town of Bethlehem."
If you haven't heard McEntire sing the weepy "Hard Candy Christmas" (and nobody does weepy better than Reba), this version of that one is well worth a listen. McEntire's take on "O Holy Night" is - no pun intended - simply divine. It truly feels like being in church while she's singing it.
With this edition of "My Kind of Christmas," Reba has made a good thing even better.
