Merry Christmas EP (Curb, 2017)

And for Scott's fans, there's plenty to enjoy here. Scott's vocals are rich and homey, colored with just enough of that deep country twang to keep things country as he marches through standards like "Winter Wonderland" and "Jingle Bell Rock." That country twang is matched with traditional big band swells on classics "The Christmas Song" and "White Christmas" while "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" follows suit, the jazzy instrumentals smooth and polished.
Taken as a whole, these five tracks are just fine in and of themselves. Scott's vocals are spot on, and the arrangements are solid as well, delivering a familiar splash of holiday cheer with just the slightest twist here and there to keep things interesting. But one might submit that those twists are perhaps just a bit too few and far between, leaving one with the challenge of discerning these renditions from others save for recognizing Scott's warm vocals.
Scott's "Merry Christmas" EP is a pleasant gift for his fans that have helped to propel him quickly up the ranks in country. And no doubt those fans will find plenty to enjoy on this five-track outing but those hoping for something a little more outside the traditional Christmas music box will have to keep looking.
