Lewis, Fulks, Jennings out with new discs

Friday, August 10, 2018 – A few singers associated with more famous family members are out with new music today.

Robbie Fulks and Linda Gail Lewis paired up for a new disc today with the aptly named "Wild! Wild! Wild!" Fulks is the long-time country traditionalist from Chicago, while Lewis has a rockabilly slant to her music. That is no surprise given that her brother is Jerry Lee Lewis. She also has recorded with Van Morrison. Fulks wrote most of the songs, while also producing the set.

Shooter Jennings, son of Waylon, veers towards a more traditional country set with "Shooter." Dave Cobb, who seems to be everywhere these days producing people from Chris Stapleton to Lori McKenna, was at the helm for this as well. This was Jennings' first disc for Cobb's Low Country Sound label.

Acoustic outfit Mountain Heart released "Soul Searching" on Compass. The band incorporates bluegrass, Americana and pop influences. Josh Shilling (piano, guitar), Seth Taylor (guitar), Aaron Ramsey (mandolin, bass) and Jeff Partin (Dobro, bass) comprise the band.

Mississippi-born, Texas-based singer and guitarist Jason Eady released "I Travel On" (Old Guitar Records). The album is his first to be recorded with his ace touring band. This is Eady's seventh release.

CD review - Shooter Jennings And The Werewolves Of Los Angeles do Zevon Shooter Jennings' tribute album of Warren Zevon covers is clearly a labor of love. Zevon was a legendary Los Angeles singer/songwriter that somehow has been overlooked by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Jennings, though, has chosen to willfully focus his attention on this great artist's life work with this excellent overview. If you really need any more proof of Zevon's greatness, just give it a listen. The album was recorded live at the Monterey, Cal. "Rebels & ...
CD review - Bluegrass Vacation The Americana Outcast Robbie Fulkshas been delivering spellbinding albums since the late '90s, but has never returned to bluegrass in that time. Select songs within both "Upland Stories" and especially "Gone Away Backward" flirted with 'grass, but it hasn't been since his sole album with The Special Consensus (1989's "A Hole in My Heart") that Fulks has fully immersed himself in the beauty that is unabashed bluegrass. CD review - Wild! Wild! Wild! Throughout her five-decade-plus career, Linda Gail Lewis, younger sister of Jerry Lee Lewis, has shone brightest when collaborating with other artists, whether it be her brother, Van Morrison or her daughters. That formula certainly holds true on her new collaboration with acclaimed songwriter and singer Robbie Fulks. In Fulks, Lewis finds a partner who excels at writing, curating and performing songs that bring out the best in her voice - rock, country and rockabilly tunes either from or ...
