Russell acknowledges "Demons"
"We all have our demons, and there's no spell to make them vanish for good," Russell said. "I'm not even sure we want such a spell. Demons have their uses. They just don't get to call the shots anymore — we put 'em on the bus, but we didn't let em drive. That's what it comes down to. They don't get to drive, and they can't steal our joy. And yes that's an Outkast homage at the end of the song."
Russell sang and played clarinet. Chauntee Ross, Elenna Canlas, Larissa Maestro, Mandy Fer and Monique Ross contributed harmony vocals. Other players were percussion by Elizabeth Pupo-Walker; piano by Lisa Coleman; drums and percussion by Megan Coleman, bass by Meg McCormick and acoustic guitars by Wendy Melvoin. Melvoic and Coleman played together as Wendy + Lisa and were part of Prince's band.
Russell already released three songs from "The Returner," including the title track,"Stay Right Here" and "Snakelife."
The release is the follow-up to her debut solo effort two years ago, "Outside Child," which received rave reviews.
Russell will launch a headlining tour in October at The Ark in Ann Arbor, Mich. and wrap up in January 2024.
