Avetts works hard for success

Saturday, November 3, 2007 – The hard work by the Avett Brothers may be paying off. And that was before the North Caorlina trio playing hard driving string band/bluegrass music won two awards at the Americana Music Association show the previous night.

During a panel session at the AMA conference in Nashville Friday, Avetts's manager Dolph Ramseur said, "This isn't rocket science. It's working hard and getting goals together."

Part of what helped the band is a heavy duty touring schedule. Paul Lohr, who books the group, said he passed on the Avetts the first time Ramseur called him, but he later changed his mind. He said in trying to book the group, he did not seek to oversell them because he would lose credibility with venues. "This is acompletely different project than having a million dollars for radio," Lohr said, referring to previous work he had done with the Dixie Chicks. He referred to it as building it "one brick at a time...I cut fair deals."

He said, for example, the first time the band was in Seattle, it drew 167 people. Six months later, the Avetts drew a full house and turned 100 people away. In April 2008, they are going to return and do 2 nights.

Several panelists suggested that the live show was what sold people on the Avetts. The group was able to obtain many reviews in national publications as well.

As for the awards, Leslie Rouffe of Songlines, which has helped promote the group, said she thought they will "definitely help. I think the buzz from the conference will help even more."

Of approximately 60 people in the room for the session, all but about 2 had seen the Avetts before.

CD reviews for The Avett Brothers

CD review - The Gleam III Usually, albums kick off with a sonic banger. And one might assume such is the case with The Avett Brothers' "The Gleam III," which begins with the promising song title, "Victory." However, the chorus to this sadly reflective opener states, "From victory, I accept defeat." That sure dulls the gleam. You can call The Avett Brothers (Seth and Scott Avett) Double Downers, but this sibling act's honesty – even when seriously sad – is refreshing. ...
CD review - True Sadness The Avett Brothers shows oftentimes offer some of the best bluegrass-inspired instrumental music around as brothers Seth and Scott surround themselves with highly skilled players. Albums, on the other hand, can sometimes be a significantly different matter. Songs on the new "True Sadness," for instance, reveal this act's well-developed introspective side. Sonically, "True Sadness" finds the group exploring beyond its rootsy, Americana expectations. ...
CD review - The Carpenter If songs give us glimpses into the songwriter's soul, then love and death weigh heavy on the minds of Scott and Seth Avett, the primary pens behind the music of The Avett Brothers. The evidence is written all over the 12 songs on the North Carolina-based trio's latest album "The Carpenter." Death plays a prominent role in The Once And Future Carpenter, the lead-off track, which offers an unconcerned look at the inevitable end of life with lines like: "And when the black ...
